WYBCX (Yale’s streaming radio) Hosts Zoom “The First Women at WYBC” Sunday, 11/13

Today at WYBCX – Yale’s streaming student station – the leaders and managers are mostly women. But that was very much NOT the case when the first female undergraduates arrived at WYBC in 1969 and after. So what was that transition like? And how did it affect the women and men who were there … and the station?

Find out by joining us on Sunday Nov 13, at 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT, for a special Zoom event titled “The First Women at WYBC.”

Our guests include attorney & government affairs professional Elaine (Orfanos) David (’71), Emmy-winning PBS executive producer Judith Vecchione (’73), and other women and men from those years and later. Please note, though: this event requires REGISTRATION – so please click now to reserve your spot. And, if you happened to be around WYBC then, Elaine & Judith would love to hear from you at women@yalerag.org with your thoughts.

Hope to see you Sunday Nov 13, at 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT for “The First Women at WYBC!”

Earlier this year, a few ’69ers who were student broadcasters at WYBC  reconnected to reminisce about our WYBC experiences, to hear how WYBC has evolved since our time and to learn more about the current state of radio. WYBC aside, it was also a terrific opportunity to renew old friendships.

We’ve organized a few Zoom sessions already. One was a presentation summarizing developments at  WYBC from our time to today.  In another, a highly respected radio industry researcher shared data about radio listening trends, including competition from streaming services and satellite radio, who is listening to what, why they’re listening and where the industry goes from here – and how these trends may affect WYBC in the future.

We recorded both of these Zoom sessions.

We’re planning a new series of Zoom sessions on related topics, including what current WYBC student members are doing. Spoiler alert: They have created a robust internet radio station: WYBC X.

WYBC xWe’d like to invite classmates to join our WYBC alumni group and attend our upcoming Zoom sessions – plus, we’ll be happy to send you links to previously recorded sessions.  If you are interested, you can email Ken Devoe (1969) at:  kendevoe@comcast.net OR email our group organizer, Kevin McKean (1974) at kevin@mckeanmedia.com.  He is not to be confused with Kevin McKeown (1969) who is also a key member of our group,

We’ll be happy to put you on our mailing list so you can join in our email discussions and receive invitations to attend our upcoming Zoom sessions.  NOTE: This is not in any way a fund-raising endeavor. We will never ask you for money. It’s just an opportunity for us to re-connect and talk about all things WYBC. Incidentally, you do not have to be a former WYBC-er to join our group. Everyone is welcome. If you’d like to be part of it, then email me or Kevin as noted above and we’d be happy to have you. Again, it’s a great way to catch up with your classmates.

We hope you will join us.  Thanks.
