In January our Talk ’67 Zoom featured Yale Medical School Professor Emeritus Dr. Meir Kryger, an expert in sleep disorders, who gave us tips on how to get more sleep and healthier sleep. (Among his tips: Don’t take long naps in the daytime; they’ll only screw up your circadian rhythm.)
But what if, like many men our age, you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, only to find yourself unable to get back to sleep because you can’t stop thinking about the regrets in your life, either recent ones or those from decades ago, like the romance you blew or that career path you didn’t follow? Dr. Krieger’s advice: Get some cognitive therapy.
Fortunately, we have the world’s leading cognitive therapist in our class, Bob Leahy, Director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in New York City, who learned his craft from the father of cognitive therapy, his great mentor, the late Dr. Aaron T. Beck, Professor in the Psychiatry Department at the University of Pennsylvania.
Bob is to cognitive therapy what Peter Scardino is to prostate surgery, and he has written or co-authored 29 books that have been translated into 24 languages. And by happy coincidence, his latest book is about regret, titled “If Only…: Finding Freedom from Regret”
He believes we have a choice: our regrets can defeat us or, if we choose, they can help us learn from our past to avoid the same mistakes in the future and finally gain self-acceptance.
