Women have become a dominant force in every aspect of American life. Not admitted to Yale when we were there, more women than men now graduate from high school, college, and professional schools.
Many delay marriage and childbearing and hold high-powered jobs in business, law, medicine, government, and academia.
In 1967, the model young American Woman was Miss America, Jane Anne Jayroe, crowned before millions on television. Today, a leading American woman is Caitlin Clark, whose NCAA women’s national championship basketball games drew more viewers than the men’s games.
The Yale of our day saw Kingman Brewster as President; today’s Yale will soon inaugurate Maurie McInnis as its 44th President.
In our lives, we have experienced many impacts of this Women’s Revolution.
- The pill, the availability of abortion, and control of reproduction
- Women’s Liberation
- The sexual revolution
- The Civil Rights Act of 1964
- Title IX and the expansion of educational, athletic, and job opportunities,
including the push for equal pay for women in all occupations - Women in the workplace, government, and academia
- The LGBTQ+ movement and gender redefinition
Andy Beveridge ‘67 will highlight and document these developments in the Women’s Revolution. He earned his Yale Ph.D. in sociology, leaving New Haven in 1973 after marrying Fredrica, whom he met at a mixer at Vassar. Andy taught at Columbia, then at Queens College and CUNY until his retirement in 2020. On contract with the New York Times since 1993, his data and analysis aid in analyzing, mapping, and visualizing trend data from the U. S. Census and other key sources. Andy has participated as an expert in more than one hundred legal engagements, providing reports, depositions, and testimony based on a wide variety of administrative and public data.
Andy will discuss data and documentation of some things you may already know – and some things you may not – about the changing role of women in American society. Bring your questions – and your wife or partner – and our world-leading sociologist and demographer classmate will enlighten us with his data-driven analysis of this mega trend and its implications for us and our future.
